The Integrator of Science and Traditional Medicine
“Medicinal mushrooms are biochemical keys that act on signaling pathways involved in the immune system, regeneration, and inflammation regulation. Their full potential for human health can only be realized when we combine rigorous scientific analysis with an awareness of their cultural roots and evolutionary significance.”
This conviction shapes the work of Philip Rebensburg, a biologist, health consultant, and author who is now regarded as one of the leading German-speaking experts on medicinal mushrooms and mycotherapy. With his books *Healthy with Medicinal Mushrooms* (Riva Verlag, 2020) and *Microdosing with Psilocybin* (Riva Verlag, 2023), he has elevated the topics of medicinal mushrooms and psychoactive mushrooms alike to a scientifically sound and accessible level.
Born in Botswana in 1980, he developed an early desire to understand how this planet works and how life on it is interconnected. His studies in biology, with a focus on human biology, microbiology, molecular genetics, and ecotoxicology, built upon this curiosity. Health challenges stemming from the autoimmune condition ME/CFS later drew his attention more intensely to how the human body functions, why it can become unbalanced, and how homeostasis (the dynamic balance of bodily processes) can be restored. This experience sharpened his interest in holistic health, which encompasses the body, mind, spirit, and environment.
In his professional work, he focuses on scientific education and quality assurance in the field of mycotherapy. He collaborates with experts, organizations, and interested members of the public to share knowledge about medicinal mushrooms, their active compounds, and their potential applications. In doing so, he places great emphasis on fact-based information and on integrating modern biological research with traditional healing concepts.
A key focus of his work is quality assurance for medicinal mushroom products. He specializes in traceability, DNA analysis, toxicological safety, and labeling standards, and assists companies in developing scientifically sound quality guidelines.
His current research focuses on the medicinal mushroom Trametes robiniophila Murr. (Huaier). As part of an international project, he is analyzing clinical and molecular biology studies and making them available to the scientific community via the huaier.eu platform. Huaier is considered a particularly promising mushroom in the fields of oncology and immunomodulation, though it remains relatively unknown in Europe.
With his 2020 book *Healthy with Medicinal Mushrooms*, Rebensburg has produced a work that became a bestseller in the German-speaking world and serves as the first in-depth introduction to mycotherapy for many readers. It combines scientific research with practical application guidelines, thereby making the world of medicinal mushrooms accessible to a broad audience. Reviewers praise the book as “clear, well-researched, and practical”—Rebensburg succeeds in combining scientific precision with clear language and a structured presentation. As a result, *Gesund mit Heilpilzen* is now considered the standard work on modern mycotherapy, used by both experts and interested laypeople alike.
He knows how to combine scientific rigor with cultural knowledge and advocates for an integrative understanding of health—as the interplay of body, mind, and environment. His personal story makes it clear that medicinal mushrooms are not just a field of research for him, but also a concrete source of hope for people with chronic illnesses. At the Mycoverse Foundation, he contributes his expertise in biological research, analytical methodology, and quality assessment, helping to responsibly integrate scientific findings into the public discourse.
