Manuel Stüttler

mycologist

“Fungi are not merely organisms—they are biochemical networks that connect evolution, ecosystems, and human health. Their full potential can only be realized when scientific precision meets an understanding of their evolutionary complexity.”

This conviction shapes the work of Manuel Stüttler—a mycologist, entrepreneur, and visionary who is now regarded as one of the most prominent figures in the field of mushroom cultivation and research in Europe. With over thirty years of experience and the Mushroom HyperTech concept, he has taken mushroom biotechnology—from spore propagation and microcultures to data-driven cultivation systems—to a new level.

Scientific Roots

Stüttler’s fascination with mushrooms was sparked during his time as a student at BOKU Vienna, where he studied food science and biotechnology. What began as academic curiosity quickly evolved into a biological research project on higher fungi and the establishment of a temporary test laboratory for mushroom cultivation in Vienna. These early experiences laid the foundation for a lifelong career at the intersection of science, technology, and entrepreneurial innovation.

Entrepreneurial Initiative

In 1998, Manuel Stüttler founded Myco-Labs in Vienna together with his brother Mark, a microbiologist specializing in fungi. The company grew into a center of excellence for advanced fungal biotechnology. Its most innovative contribution—the concept of cultivating fungi in bottles—has permanently transformed the industry and is still regarded today as a pioneering methodology in modern mycology.

Key Competencies and Research Focus Areas

Stüttler’s work combines high-precision mycology and spore technology with the development of intelligent fungal cultivation systems. He specializes in spore analysis and bioactive optimization, as well as in the archiving and structuring of data for mycelium and spore databases. The cultivation of complex fungal species is just as much a part of his core expertise as research into frequency-based communication in fungal networks and the symbiosis of biological systems.

A particular strength – networked thinking

Manuel Stüttler understands better than almost anyone else how to combine scientific rigor with a deep understanding of biological complexity. His passion lies not only in the cultivation and analysis of fungi, but also in understanding fungi as part of a larger network—as a bridge between ecology, biotechnology, and human health. At the Mycoverse Foundation, where he serves on the Scientific Committee, he brings this perspective to the international scientific discourse and helps to responsibly anchor knowledge about fungi in research and society.
