Professor of Molecular Biology and Cancer Research
“True innovation does not come from discarding the old, but from reinterpreting it using the tools of the present. Traditional Asian medicine has millennia of experience with medicinal substances—our task is to harness this wisdom with the molecular precision of modern science and make it applicable to medicine.”
This conviction is the common thread running through the extraordinary life’s work of Prof. Dr. Florian Überall—a scientist who, like few others, understands how to bridge the gap between millennia-old healing traditions and modern cancer research.
Florian Überall’s path into science was unconventional—and that is what makes his perspective so valuable. In the Kitzbühel area, he first gained practical experience as a druggist, pharmacy assistant, and chemical laboratory technician. These years of hands-on experience gave him a lifelong gift: an intuitive understanding of how natural substances work—not just in theory, but in practice. After completing his secondary education at Adolf-Pichler-Platz in Innsbruck, he went on to study microbiology and biochemistry at the University of Innsbruck. In 2000, he completed his habilitation in medical biochemistry—the beginning of a scientific career that continues to this day and transcends the boundaries of various disciplines.
Since 1993, Professor Überall has been conducting research at the renowned Center for Chemistry and Biomedicine (CCB) at the Medical University of Innsbruck—over three decades during which he has established himself as an authority in cancer research and nutritional biochemistry. His research delves deep: he deciphers the molecular signaling pathways that govern the development and progression of cancer. But unlike many others, he does not seek answers solely in synthetic compounds. His particular focus is on natural substances—compounds derived from plants, traditional remedies, and, not least, mushrooms—that possess anticancer properties and therapeutic potential.
As the founder and director of the Information Center for Tibetan Medicine and the Information Center for the Power of Nature, he established frameworks that bring together ancient healing traditions and modern science. His entrepreneurial vision led to the founding of Natest – Natural Substance Testing & Consulting GmbH in Telfs, which offers comprehensive scientific evaluation services for health products and ensures that traditional remedies meet the required standards for safety and efficacy.
For the past six years, Dr. Überall has been a permanent member of the Advisory Board for Traditional Asian Medicine (TAM) at the Austrian Federal Ministry of Health in Vienna. In this role, he contributes his expertise in natural product research and the evaluation of traditional medicine to help shape national health policy. He ensures that complementary and alternative medical approaches are not marginalized but, based on scientific evidence, are given a place in the Austrian healthcare system.
He knows how to combine molecular biological precision with a deep understanding of traditional medicine and advocates for an integrative approach to healing—as an interplay between millennia-old wisdom and modern science. As a member of the Mycoverse Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Board, he brings decades of experience in cancer research to the table and provides important insights into the potential anticancer properties of various fungal species. His expertise in testing and advising on natural substances ensures that the foundation’s mycological research meets the highest standards of scientific accuracy. Professor Überall shows us that the scientific power of fungi must not only be understood but also validated so that it can realize its full potential in modern medicine.
