From Managing Risk to Restoring Nature

One of the greatest gifts of experience is that over time, we begin to ask different questions and those questions gradually change the way we think.

For more than two decades, I worked in international executive positions within the insurance industry, supporting multinational organisations dealing with complex risks and environmental liabilities across many countries. Yet the more I learned about the consequences of environmental degradation, the more I wondered why so much knowledge, creativity and financial effort was devoted to managing the consequences of damage, while comparatively less attention was given to preventing it or restoring what had already been lost.

This question changed not only the direction of my work, but gradually reshaped my perspective on the relationship between people and nature.

Discovering Nature’s Own Solutions

My search for answers led me to regenerative agriculture, sustainable land management and eventually fungal biotechnology. What fascinated me was not only the extraordinary capabilities of fungi themselves, but the quiet intelligence of natural systems. 

Hidden beneath our feet, fungal networks connect plants, regenerate soils, recycle nutrients and help sustain entire ecosystems. Nature has spent millions of years refining these relationships. I believe we still have much to learn from them.

Joining the Mycoverse Foundation felt like a natural continuation of that journey. It brought together scientists, practitioners and innovators who share a common belief that scientific knowledge becomes most valuable when it can be translated into practical solutions that improve people’s lives while restoring the natural systems upon which we all depend.

Building Bridges

My own role within this vision is not primarily that of a scientist but of a connector. Throughout my professional life I have learned how to bring together people with different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. Today I hope to use those same skills to help connect universities, governments, industry and local communities, creating opportunities for collaboration that no single discipline could achieve alone.

Over the years I have come to believe that many of the challenges facing our societies are not separate problems but interconnected parts of one living system. Soil health influences food. Water influences health. Education influences opportunity. Communities influence resilience. When we begin to understand these relationships, entirely new possibilities emerge.

A Philosophy Inspired by Nature

I also believe that the most meaningful solutions are often those that appear surprisingly simple. Nature rarely wastes energy. It creates balance through diversity, cooperation and continuous regeneration. Perhaps our own societies can learn from these same principles.

My vision therefore reaches beyond environmental restoration. I hope to contribute to a future where science and nature complement one another, where knowledge is openly shared, where practical solutions strengthen both communities and ecosystems, and where future generations inherit not only cleaner environments but also a renewed sense of connection with the living world around them.

The more I learn, the more I realise how much remains to be discovered.

I do not claim to have all the answers, but I believe that curiosity, openness and collaboration are often the beginning of better ones.
