Mark Stüttler
"Without understanding the milieu's essential role in food cultivation and in resolving human diseases, we won’t have an optimized food production or health system that can work at its full potential. Fungi, present on the planet millions of years before plants and other organisms, have a much bigger potential to save and restore our environment and health than we could imagine.”
Mark Stuettler, mushroom cultivation expert
Mark Stüttler, an Austrian mycologist and entrepreneur, has been a prominent figure in the field of mushroom cultivation and research in Europe and beyond for over 24 years. His journey in the world of mushrooms began during his academic years when his fascination with fungi sparked. This early interest led to a biology research project on mushroom cultivation, specifically higher fungi, and the establishing of a temporary test laboratory for mushroom breeding in Vienna. In 1998, with the support of his brother, Manuel Stüttler, a microbiologist who also specialized in mushrooms, he launched his first mushroom venture, Myco-Labs, in Vienna.
They did research and production of edible and medicinal mushrooms until 2007 when Mark moved to Innsbruck and founded the Mushroom Research Center Austria GmbH (MRCA) to develop his research on the cultivation of mushrooms. Building upon his experience at MRCA, Mark established the Mushroom Production Center GmbH (MPC) in 2012, where he assumed the CEO role. He launched the brand "Tyroler Glückspilze," which is now an established brand in Europe for medicinal mushrooms.
Over the years, Mark has participated in numerous conferences, workshops, and training programs worldwide, including events in the Netherlands, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Colombia, Serbia, and Austria, and possesses today an extensive network with the most renowned individuals and institutions in the field of mycology, such as Dr. Paul Stamets, Dr. John Holliday or Prof. Solomon Wasser along with several universities and research organizations around the world.
Since 2012, Mark has been a driving force in developing and delivering lectures and training programs for mycotherapy and mushroom cultivation in Europe and Africa. His aim is to promote food safety and production techniques using local resources (decentralization). He is a sought-after consultant for projects involving the cultivation or use of mushrooms, particularly in mycotherapy and mycoremediation, demonstrating the practical applications of his expertise.
In 2022, Mark co-founded the Mycoverse Foundation with Alexis Kaiser to share his passion and expertise about mushrooms with the world and benefit future generations.
